How to use it

Pick the appliance type from the presets: open fireplace at $175 base and 45 minutes, wood stove lined at $150 and 40, wood stove with no liner at $225 and 75, lined insert at $140 and 50, or gas unit at $110 and 30. Set the total flue count and the editable price for each extra flue, $75 by default. Pick the creosote level: light and dusty adds nothing, moderate adds $40 and 15 minutes, heavy glazed adds $150 and 45 minutes for the rotary work. Pick roof difficulty: walkable adds nothing, steep pitch adds $50 and 20 minutes, 2-plus stories adds $90 and 35 minutes. Toggle the add-ons you want to quote: Level 2 camera inspection, nest or blockage removal, chimney cap install, top-sealing damper, each with its own editable price field that updates the quote labels live. In your numbers, set your target dollars per hour ($85 default) and your drive round trip in minutes (30 default). The job minutes box auto-estimates from your picks but stays editable for jobs that smell different. The quote card lists every line item, rounds the customer quote up to the nearest $5, shows total committed minutes split into job plus drive, your effective dollars per hour, and a verdict: PRICED RIGHT at your target, TIGHT near it, or UNDERPRICED with the raise amount needed.

Worked example

Example only, not typical pricing. Take the default open fireplace: $175 base, 1 flue, light creosote, walkable roof, no add-ons. The quote is $175, already a multiple of $5. The tool estimates 45 job minutes plus 30 drive minutes, or 75 committed minutes, which is 1.25 hours. Effective rate is $175 over 1.25, or $140 per hour, against an $85 target: PRICED RIGHT. Now a stacked job: a wood stove with no liner ($225 base), 2 flues with the second at $75, heavy glazed creosote (+$150), steep roof (+$50), and a Level 2 camera inspection (+$125). The line items total $625, already a multiple of $5. Minutes are 75 plus 15 for the extra flue plus 45 for creosote plus 20 for the roof plus 25 for the inspection, or 180 job minutes, plus 30 drive for 210 total minutes, which is 3.5 hours. Effective rate is $625 over 3.5, or $178.57 per hour: PRICED RIGHT on a hard job, because every variable priced in.

FAQs

**Why build the quote from stacked variables instead of one flat rate?**

A simple one-flue fireplace and a no-liner stove with glazed creosote on a steep roof are different jobs. A flat quote that covers both either loses money on the hard ones or loses customers on the easy ones. Stacking the variables prices each house on its own facts.

**How does the tool estimate job minutes?**

It adds the appliance base time, 15 minutes per extra flue, the creosote and roof additions, and 25 minutes for a camera inspection, then adds your drive minutes. The field stays editable, so override it whenever a job reads differently in person.

**What do the verdicts mean?**

PRICED RIGHT means your effective rate beats your target. TIGHT means you land within 85 percent of target. UNDERPRICED means you are below that, and the verdict shows the dollar raise, rounded to $5, that hits your target at those minutes.

**Why round the quote up to $5?**

Customer-facing numbers stay clean, and rounding always works up, never down, so the rounding favors you instead of quietly shaving the quote.

**Are the starting prices industry standards?**

No. They are editable starting points for your market. Set every field, appliance base, extras, add-ons, and drive time, to your own rates before you trust a quote.
