Pound Price Check

How to use it

Wash-and-fold operators lose money on the per-pound price. A competitive $2.25 a pound sounds fine until processing hours, utilities, detergent and bags, the app cut, and the pickup plus delivery drive are all priced at zero. Start with your bar (40) and daily goal ($300). Pick a preset: 20 lb home, 40 lb family, or Airbnb turnover. Each fills pounds, price per pound, delivery fee, and minimum order. The processing card sets pounds per hour, utilities per pound, and detergent plus bags per pound. The drive card prices pickup plus delivery minutes and miles, valued at your bar plus vehicle cost per mile, with an app cut that comes off revenue first. Revenue is pounds times price plus fee, or the minimum order, whichever is higher. Results show true cost per pound, profit per order, and the big number: your effective hourly rate, profit divided by total hours. Verdicts are LOSING MONEY, WORKING TOO CHEAP, CLOSE, BUT LEAKING, or PRICED RIGHT. The gut check grades your instinct price per pound; the day planner turns orders per day into profit and hours. No signup; runs on your phone.

Worked example

Example only, not typical pricing. The 20 lb home order at $2.25 a pound against a $40 bar: revenue is 20 times $2.25 equals $45. Processing is 20 divided by 30 pounds per hour equals 0.67 hours at $40, which is $26.67. Water and energy are 20 times $0.35 equals $7.00; detergent and bags are 20 times $0.12 equals $2.40. Drive is 30 minutes at $40 plus 18 miles at $0.67 equals $32.06. True cost is $68.13, or $3.41 a pound. Profit is negative $23.13, so the verdict is LOSING MONEY at negative $19.82 per hour; the price must reach $3.41 a pound just to break even. A $2.50 gut price brings $50 of revenue and still loses $18.13, so it stays LOSING MONEY. The day planner at 6 orders a day shows negative $138.78 of profit on 7.0 hours.

FAQs

Why does a $45 order lose money?

The 30-minute drive valued at your bar plus processing time costs more than the order pays. The drive is the leak, not the wash.

How does the minimum order protect me?

Revenue is the higher of pounds times price plus fee or the minimum, so small loads still pay for the trip. Raise it until one small order covers the drive.

What should I enter for the app platform cut?

The percentage the app takes off revenue. It comes off first, before costs. Set it to zero if you operate independently.

What does the gut check show?

Your instinct price per pound re-graded into an effective hourly rate, the money left on the table, or the exact loss on the order.

What triggers the day planner burnout flag?

More than 10 hours a day. The note says to raise the price per pound or stack orders tighter per route instead of adding more stops.
