How to use it

Start with the episode card. Enter your raw audio minutes per episode, then pick an edit intensity: Light (1.5x), Standard (3x, the default), or Heavy (5x). The multiplier means edit hours per hour of raw audio, so Standard on a 60-minute episode is 3 hours of cutting, cleanup, and mixing. You can also type a custom ratio, plus how many revision rounds you include and how many minutes each one takes. Next, check the extras card and be honest: show notes, audiograms or clips, and upload plus scheduling each get their own checkbox with editable minutes (the tool starts with show notes and upload checked). Then the money card: what you charge per episode, the hourly rate you want to earn, and your episodes per month. Everything updates live. The results card breaks your time into editing, revisions, extras, and a total of real hours per episode, shows your true hourly rate against your target on a colored bar, and gives the minimum price that hits your rate, whether you are undercharging, plus a verdict and monthly retainer math. The figures are estimates for planning only.

Worked example

Example only, not typical earnings. Suppose you edit a 60-minute episode at the Standard 3x ratio, with 1 revision round of 15 minutes, show notes (20 min) and upload plus scheduling (10 min). Editing time is 60 / 60 x 3 = 3.0 hours. Revisions add 1 x 15 / 60 = 0.25 hours. Extras add 30 / 60 = 0.5 hours. Real hours per episode: 3.0 + 0.25 + 0.5 = 3.75 hours. At $100 per episode, your true rate is 100 / 3.75 = $26.67 per hour, shown as $27/hr in the tool. With a $50/hr target, the minimum price to hit your rate is 3.75 x 50 = $187.50, so the tool says you are undercharging by $87.50 per episode. At 4 episodes per month, monthly at your current price is $400 while monthly at your rate is $750, leaving $350 on the table each month. The verdict for this case is UNDERPRICED.

FAQs

What does the edit intensity ratio actually mean?

The ratio is edit hours per hour of raw audio. Light (1.5x), Standard (3x), and Heavy (5x) are editable starting points, and you can type any custom ratio you like. A 60-minute episode at the Standard 3x ratio counts as 3 hours of editing work. Pick the preset that matches your real workflow, or use a custom value if you have timed your own editing.

Why does the tool count extras like show notes and uploading?

Because that time is real work you probably do not bill for. Each extra (show notes, audiogram or clips, upload plus scheduling) has its own checkbox and its own minutes field, both editable. If you skip an extra, uncheck it and those minutes drop out of your true rate. The defaults are starting points, not prescriptions.

What is the "minimum price to hit your rate" number?

It is your total real hours per episode (editing plus revisions plus extras) multiplied by your target hourly rate. If your episode takes 3.75 real hours and your target is $50/hr, the minimum price is $187.50. Charge that per episode and you earn your target rate across the whole job, not just the editing time.

What are the verdicts telling me?

The tool compares your true hourly rate to your target. PRICED TO PROFIT means you are at or above your target. CLOSE, BUT LEAKING TIME means you are at 80 percent or more of target, and it suggests raising your price or trimming extras. UNDERPRICED means you are below 80 percent of target. If you have not entered episode details or a target rate yet, it tells you which input is missing.

Do my numbers leave my device?

No. The tool says your numbers never leave your device, and the footer notes the figures are estimates for planning only. Everything runs locally in your browser, so you can test different prices and workflows without signing up or sending anything anywhere.
