Enter the transcript: certified original pages, copy orders, and rough draft pages. Pick the turnaround preset, Regular, Expedited at 1.5x, or Daily at 2x, which multiplies your original page rate. Enter hours on record and production hours; the note says production hours are editing, certifying, proofing, and exhibits, the hours nobody sees. Enter your rates: original, copy, and rough draft dollars per page plus the appearance fee. The note says they are starting points from reported agency rate sheets, and your market and contract rule. The production costs card is the margin nobody prices in: scopist dollars per page, proofreader per job, and other costs. The agency spread card shows what the agency bills the client for original and copy pages, so you see both sides of the same transcript. Results show the line-item breakdown, your net, true dollars per page after the scopist, the client bill, the dollar spread the agency keeps, a green and red split bar, and your effective dollars per hour. The verdict fires THE AGENCY EATS THE MARGIN at 40 percent or more, HEALTHY SPREAD at 25 to 40, or FAIR SPLIT below that.
Example only, not typical pricing. Enter a 200-page transcript with 2 copy orders at the default rates: $3.50 original, $0.75 copy, $125 appearance. Your gross is $700 plus $300 plus $125, or $1,125. Production costs are $200 in scopist plus $75 proofreader plus $25 other, or $300. You net $825 across 6 record hours and 8 production hours, which is $58.93 per hour, and your true rate after the scopist is $2.50 per page. The agency bills the client $1,300 on the originals plus $1,000 on the copies plus $125 appearance, or $2,425. The agency keeps $1,300 of the bill, which is 54 percent: THE AGENCY EATS THE MARGIN fires, and the verdict names the dollars with a direct-client comparison line.
**How does the turnaround preset work?**
Expedited multiplies your original page rate by 1.5 and Daily by 2, on both your side and the agency billing side. Regular leaves the rate as entered.
**Why is the scopist cost subtracted before the true per-page number?**
Because the scopist is paid per page out of your original-page fees. Your true dollars per page is original fees minus scopist cost, divided by original pages.
**What does the agency spread percentage mean?**
What the agency keeps divided by the total client bill. At 40 percent or more the verdict says the agency eats the margin.
**What does the split bar show?**
Your share of the client bill in green against the agency's share in red, so the two sides of the same transcript are visible at a glance.
**Are the default rates official reporter rates?**
No. The note says they are starting points from reported rate sheets, and the footer says rates vary by state and contract. Set your own numbers.
