Stump Price Check

How to use it

Stump grinding quotes die on the per-inch number. A $3 per inch price hides the height-above-grade work, the teeth wear, the drive there and back, and the tight-access jobs that take twice as long. Start with your bar (75), a minimum job fee ($100), profit margin percent (15), and a daily take-home goal. Set your per-inch prices, then pick a stump preset: Small 12, Medium 24, or Large 36 inches, each filling diameter, height, and grind minutes as editable rows. Add stumps for multi-stump jobs, with surface-root dollars plus a hardwood toggle that adds 20 percent. The leaks card prices tight access (25 extra minutes plus $40), haul-off ($60), unload and setup minutes, teeth and sharpening dollars per stump, drive minutes, and miles at your vehicle cost. Results show per-stump revenue, teeth and travel cost, true cost, and the recommended quote (per-inch math plus margin, rounded up to $10, never below the minimum), with effective dollars per hour against your bar. Verdicts are PRICED RIGHT, CLOSE, BUT LEAKING, WORKING TOO CHEAP, or LOSING MONEY. The gut check grades your instinct quote, and the day planner turns your goal into jobs.

Worked example

Example only, not typical pricing. Medium stump: 24 inches of diameter and 12 inches above grade, at a $75 bar with 15 percent margin. Per-inch revenue is 24 x $3 + 12 x $2 = $96. Grind time is 56 minutes plus 20 setup plus 40 drive = 1.93 committed hours. Labor cost = 1.93 x 75 = $145; vehicle = 30 x $0.67 = $20.10; teeth = $10. True cost = $175.10. Recommended quote = ceil(max(100, 96 x 1.15) / 10) x 10 = $120. Effective rate = 120 / 1.93 = $62.07 per hour, which sits between 60 and 85 percent of the bar, so the verdict is WORKING TOO CHEAP. A $150 gut quote would pay $77.59 per hour and clear the bar, so the instinct price is fine; the minimum fee and the per-inch rate are what need raising.

FAQs

Why charge for height above grade?

A stump standing 12 inches tall has to be ground down to grade. That height is extra grinding time and extra teeth wear, so the tool prices it per inch just like diameter.

What does the hardwood toggle do?

It adds 20 percent to that stump's revenue. Oak, maple, and hickory grind slower and chew teeth faster than pine, so the quote should reflect it.

How are teeth priced in?

Enter your teeth and sharpening dollars per stump. One rock hit can kill a set of teeth, so the number you enter should reflect your real average, not your best day.

When does the minimum job fee kick in?

When the per-inch math plus margin lands below your minimum, the recommended quote holds at the minimum. Single small stumps with full drive time need the floor.

What does the day planner flag?

It turns your daily goal into jobs like this one and totals your hours. Cross 8 hours and it tells you to fix the price, not stack more stumps.
