How to use it

Enter your target hourly rate, $125 by default, and your minimum fee per return, $150 by default, so small returns never price below what they cost you. Optionally enter what you charged the client last year to see the year-over-year change. Pick a client preset, Simple W-2, Investor, Freelancer, Landlord, or S-Corp owner, which checks the right forms, or check forms yourself. Each of the 13 line items shows its estimated minutes and an editable fee: the 1040 base at 45 minutes and $175, Schedule C at 60 minutes and $150, Schedule E rental per property with a quantity box, and so on. All fees and times are editable starting points, not industry standards. The add-ons card covers state returns by count at $60 each, bookkeeping cleanup hours at $75 an hour, a 25 percent rush premium, and a $25 extension filing. The quote card lists every line, floors the total at your minimum fee, and shows hours of work with your effective rate per hour. The verdict compares that rate to your target and tells you exactly how much to raise an underpriced return.

Worked example

Example only, not typical pricing. Take the Freelancer preset: 1040 base $175, Schedule 1 $35, Schedule C $150, Schedule SE $25, Form 8829 $50, for $435. Minutes are 45 plus 15 plus 60 plus 10 plus 20, or 150 minutes, which is 2.5 hours. The effective rate is $435 over 2.5, or $174 per hour, against a $125 target: priced right. Add one state return at $60 and the fee is $495 over 3 hours, or $165 per hour. Check the rush box and it adds 25 percent, for $618.75. If you charged this client $400 last year, the raise line shows this is 24 percent over last year.

FAQs

Why not charge one flat fee for every return?

A simple W-2 and an S-corp owner are different jobs with different hours and risk. Complexity pricing matches the fee to the work; flat fees mean simple returns subsidize hard ones and you undercharge the hard ones.

What is the minimum fee for?

It floors the total so no return prices below what it costs you to open the file. If the line items add up under it, the quote shows the "raised to your minimum" line.

When should I charge a rush premium?

The tool adds 25 percent for jobs under 7 days. Rush work displaces scheduled work and creates error risk, so the premium compensates both. Turn it on and the quote updates instantly.

How do I price bookkeeping cleanup?

By the hour, in the add-ons card, at $75 by default. Messy books are separate work from the return itself; folding them into the return fee hides hours you should be billing.

How do I raise fees on repeat clients?

Enter last year's fee and the raise line shows the percent change, so you can quote with confidence. The tool even flags it if the new price comes in lower than last year, which is the mistake to avoid.
